Paul B. Wiggin of Upper Montclair, construction exec, honored by Scouts

Paul Benson Wiggin, 76, of Upper Montclair, who was honored by his hometown for community service and by the Boy Scouts for years of dedicated leadership, died yesterday at home.

A Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Cassians Church, Upper Montclair. Arrangements are by the Prout Funeral Home, Verona.

Mr. Wiggin was an architectural draftsman and construction manager for various firms in northern New Jersey for more than 40 years.

He was a graduate of the Pratt Institute, and attended Columbia University and the University of Delft in the Netherlands.

From 1951 to 1953, Mr. Wiggin served in the Army Signal Corps as a cryptographer in Germany and Georgia.

The recipient of the Edgar A. Ferdon Award for Community Service in 1999 from the Montclair Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Wiggin was a swimming instructor at the Young Mens Christian Association (YMCA) of Montclair and a water safety instructor for the American Red Cross in Montclair.

Active with the Boy Scouts of America for more than 65 years, Mr. Wiggin joined Troop 1 in Essex Fells in 1941. He later joined Troop 12 in Montclair and served as an assistant Scoutmaster, quartermaster and member of the troop committee.

He was a merit badge instructor for swimming and water safety with the Eagle Rock Council and the Essex Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and was the waterfront director at Camp Glen Gray in Oakland and Camp Yaw Paw in Mahwah.

Mr. Wiggin was also a vigil member of the Order of the Arrow, and an honored member and past president of the Old Guard of Camp Glen Gray. He was a recipient of the Boy Scouts of America Cannonball District Award of Merit and, in 1993, the Boy Scouts of America Essex Council awarded him the Silver Beaver Award. He also served on camping committees for the Eagle Rock Council and the Essex Council of the Boy Scouts.

He belonged to the Cosmopolitan Club in Montclair.

Born in Montclair, Mr. Wiggin lived in Essex Fells for 10 years and Montclair before moving to Upper Montclair many years ago.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Mieke; sons, Carl and Peter; daughters, Emilie and Marion; a sister, Nancy Townsend, and two grandchildren.
