A powerful instinct caused Emily and I to cut short our backpacking trip on the Kalalau trail in Kauai Monday afternoon, and return to our base near Hanalei yesterday. When we returned, we learned that Emil Relat, Emily's 91 year-old grandfather, had passed away. I've had the pleasure of knowing Emil for the last 7+ years, and we've had some great conversations. From what I've seen and heard he's had a long, enjoyable and successful life, exactly what all of us hope for.

Emil has been a wonderful patriarch to a great extended family that I've had the pleasure of joining. I hope you'll join me in your own way by praying, thinking positive thoughts and thanking the spirits for Emil Relat.

I've been training to become a volunteer firefighter with our local Gold Ridge Fire Department since the beginning of March. On Saturday we slowly burnt a house to the ground to learn about fire behavior and use our small but growing set of firefighting skills at a house that was donated for demolition on nearby Burnside Rd. (how appropriate is that!) What a great day it was. We were surrounded by firefighters with a broad range of skills and experience who were all more than generous in their willingness to transfer their knowledge and united in their excitement about what we were all doing. I've still got about 2 months of Saturdays before I can go on a call, and I can't wait!

View the full photo gallery here
