I stealthily signed off of iChat with a "see you later," then jumped on the redeye to join family and friends in wishing a happy 50th to my sister Emilie. Here are a few photos.

Emil Joseph Relat, Sept 2, 1917 - May 25, 2009

A powerful instinct caused Emily and I to cut short our backpacking trip on the Kalalau trail in Kauai Monday afternoon, and return to our base near Hanalei yesterday. When we returned, we learned that Emil Relat, Emily's 91 year-old grandfather, had passed away. I've had the pleasure of knowing Emil for the last 7+ years, and we've had some great conversations. From what I've seen and heard he's had a long, enjoyable and successful life, exactly what all of us hope for.

Emil has been a wonderful patriarch to a great extended family that I've had the pleasure of joining. I hope you'll join me in your own way by praying, thinking positive thoughts and thanking the spirits for Emil Relat.

Here's the death notice from the Sacramento Bee

I've been training to become a volunteer firefighter with our local Gold Ridge Fire Department since the beginning of March. On Saturday we slowly burnt a house to the ground to learn about fire behavior and use our small but growing set of firefighting skills at a house that was donated for demolition on nearby Burnside Rd. (how appropriate is that!) What a great day it was. We were surrounded by firefighters with a broad range of skills and experience who were all more than generous in their willingness to transfer their knowledge and united in their excitement about what we were all doing. I've still got about 2 months of Saturdays before I can go on a call, and I can't wait!

View the full photo gallery here

The stars aligned, the job gods rained a nursing position on new graduate Emma, and we were lucky to be able to join Kristin, Leah, Maya (Bruce), Aija and Bob on their trip to Costa RIca's Nicoya Peninsula. We spent a sweet week relaxing at the beautiful Casa Colina B&B in Santa Teresa/Mal Pais with our wonderful hosts Ariana and David and the yummy frühstük stylings of Ari's mom Inge.
